Medicare Supplements

Medicare Supplement plans, also known as Medigap plans, are insurance policies that cover various costs typically not covered under Original Medicare. There are ten different Medigap plans to choose from. Each plan offers varying amounts of coverage. These plans are labeled as A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and N.

It’s important that you understand the coverage involved with both of these parts and when you’ll be able to enroll, so let’s get started.

What are Medicare Supplements?

Medicare Supplements, also called Medigap, help reduce immediate out-of-pocket costs1 associated with healthcare. These costs can include deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.

What are the Medicare Supplement Plans?

There are ten Medigap plans, which offer a different range of benefits. The plans are labeled A through N, excluding the letters E, H, I, and J. Each plan covers different gaps in Medicare coverage.

Plan A is the most basic plan and covers what Medicare won't cover for outpatient costs. Plan B covers all that Plan A does in addition to Medicare Part A deductibles. Plan C covers everything except Medicare excess charges and is the second most popular plan.

Plan D covers most benefits, except for Medicare Part B and excess charges. Plan F is the most popular and most comprehensive plan covering all benefits and leaving you with no out-of-pocket fees. Plan G covers everything except for Medicare Part B deductibles.

Plans K, L, and M are less popular because they cover 50% to 75%2 of most costs. Not all insurance carriers offer these plans because they are not requested often. Plan N offers a low premium and pays copays for certain visits like the emergency room and doctors’ visits.

With Plan C and Plan F being phased out1, those who were eligible for Medicare on January 1, 2020 or after will not have the option of purchasing those plans.
